# The Argument, Top Down

These are **candidate** spine statements. They are not level 1, they are not agreed, and they are
**arrived at from the universe** rather than declared ahead of it. The test is stated at the end.

## Why the order matters more than the content

The first book argues *up* to its thesis. It opens by asking why graphs at all, builds a case
across five ideas, states a grammar, defends the grammar against schema-first, and arrives at a
graph at every boundary in chapter 6. A reader who stops at chapter 3, which most will, never
reaches the claim the book is named after.

The second book starts at the claim. Everything after it is descent: the same claim at lower
altitude, with more detail, more evidence and more edges. **A reader who stops at any point has
a complete book**, because every altitude is complete at its own altitude. That is the fractal
property, applied to the reading experience rather than described in a chapter about it.

## The name, and what belongs in it

**Title:** *Fractal Semantic Graphs: Meaning Through Connectivity*.
**Subtitle:** *For humans and agents*.

Both halves of the title come from documents carried at `/v1/docs/`: the first from
*Fractal Semantic Graphs All The Way Down*, the second from *Thinking in Graphs*, whose own
subtitle it is. The subtitle is a different kind of thing from either: it names **who the book
is for**, not what it is about, and that difference decides where it may appear.

An audience descriptor in a title field is a claim about the book's subject, and it would be the
wrong claim. The descriptive subtitle recorded on the metadata sheet takes that field instead.

## The candidate spine

Five statements, offered as the current guess and nothing more. The founder's note on them is the
right one to carry at the top: *these five key elements might not be level one, we should not
assume that this is it.*

They are here because a plan with no candidate is harder to argue with than a plan with a wrong
one. Each is a node, each needs evidence edges that resolve, and **each is re-derived in phase 3
from the universe**, at which point some will survive, some will move down an altitude, and at
least one should be replaced by something the universe surfaces that nobody listed here.

### 1. Fractal semantic graphs

**Corrected 23 August. The first version of this statement was wrong about its own title.**

Semantic graphs nested in a fractal way: graphs of graphs of graphs, ontologies of ontologies. A
lexicon exists and is well connected, and **any scope may extend, specialise or override it where
it needs to**, dynamically, without asking the centre. That is what Issues-FS does, and it is what
the phrase means.

The first draft defined it as *the same grammar at every altitude*, which is a claim about
**uniformity**. The founder's claim is about **composition with local override**, which is a
different and more interesting thing: uniformity is a constraint that makes things comparable,
override is a capability that lets local meaning survive without fragmenting the whole.

Uniformity is still true and is now in its right place: it is the **mechanism**, not the claim.
What makes an override safe rather than a fork is that the grammar for expressing one is the same
at every level. The pack had the mechanism standing in for the claim.

The correction is worth recording for a second reason. `docs/issues-fs-lexicon.html`, carried on
this site since v0.3.25, says in its own words that the Lexicon is **not** a schema registry and
**not** the authoritative source of definitions, and that any scope can extend, specialise or
override a bootstrap definition. The carried source contradicted the pack's definition and nobody
noticed, which is a finding about the pack rather than about the source.

*Evidence:* `docs/fractal-semantic-graphs.html` (the source of the title), `docs/graphs-of-graphs.html`,
the capability scale read across five vaults, and this book's own five altitudes.

### 2. Meaning through connectivity

A node carries no meaning inside it. What a thing **is** emerges from the edges traceable from
it. Properties may carry data; they never carry meaning. The node is the address, the edges are
the meaning.

*Evidence:* `docs/thinking-in-graphs.html` (the cornerstone, whose title is this book's
subtitle), `docs/digital-twins-of-anything.html`, the junction rule in the VoiceDebrief vault.

### 3. The graph is the author's, and the disagreement is the finding

Graphs are determined by their creator. Two people modelling the same thing produce two graphs,
and the useful move is not to merge them. It is to bridge them and read where they diverge,
because divergence is information about the modellers, not noise to be cleaned.

*Evidence:* `docs/ontologies-of-ontologies.html`, `docs/concepts-not-words.html`,
`docs/issues-fs-lexicon.html` (authority by connectivity rather than decree).

### 4. Confidence is a function of connectivity, and absence is measurable

How much a claim is worth is how far its chain of custody runs and how much connected evidence
supports it. A named absence is worth more than a hidden one, and whether a graph endpoint
reaches reality is itself a computable fact.

*Evidence:* `docs/confidence-through-evidence.html`, `docs/the-grounding-ladder.html`,
`docs/a-fact-in-a-vacuum.html`, the ghosted edges in the Risk Graph Explorer.

### 5. Therefore: computed conclusions rather than asserted ones

If the four above hold, a claim about a body of work stops being an opinion and becomes
something a build computes. The themes of a book are where its evidence converges, not where its
author says they are. This book demonstrates it on itself, which is the only demonstration that
cannot be staged.

*Evidence:* the retrospective at `documents/what-the-graphs-found.html`, the twelve findings in
it, and the five checks that run on every build.

### 6. Candidate, added 23 August: a map is a graph that has gained position, movement and time

You cannot have maps without graphs. But a map is where a graph gains **position that means
something, movement that is the point, and time that is expressible**, and those three are what
turn a graph from a description into something you can act on. A map of a map of a map is the
fractal claim in its most legible form, and the evolution axis is not fixed: other evolutions can
be mapped, which generalises the technique rather than tying it to one diagram.

*Evidence:* the first edition's chapter 11 and `/v1/maps/`, the Wardley material in the Send
corpus (eight briefs, from the primer through to the agent-mandate maps), and the fact that this
project's own method is being described in exactly these terms: explorer, villager, back to
explorer with better tools.

*Why it is a candidate and not yet a statement:* it is the one spine idea whose evidence has not
been carried onto this site. Nothing in `/v1/docs/` covers it. That gap is itself the argument
for phase 2 running before phase 3.

## How the descent works

Each altitude is a complete book. The relation between them is **compression**, and it runs
upward: level 2 is a compression of level 3, not an expansion of level 1. This matters, and it
is the thing the first book's ladder got structurally right and the second book must not lose.

**Revised 23 August.** The founder's description of the ladder differs from the first draft in
one place that matters: **L5 is the prose, which is the book**, not a reference appendix, and
**L3 is where the action is**, because it is the level with the most connection to the graphs
being generated. L2 is the compression, L1 is the super summary in which almost every word links
down. The reference material (concept register, path atlas, measurement tables) is not an
altitude at all: it is the universe, and it sits underneath all five.

Sizes are targets for shaping, not gates. The gate is on **coverage**, not length: every node at
level N must have a parent at level N-1 and at least one child at level N+1 once that level
exists. A node with no parent is unreachable by a reader descending. A node with no child at
the level below is a claim the book never expands.

**Level 5 does not exist in phase one** (memo 2.11) and its gate is explicit: it opens only when
levels 1 to 4 are complete and the graph has been agreed.

## What lives at each level, provisionally

This is a proposal for shaping, not a table of contents. The actual placement is decided by the
graph in phase 2.

- **L1** the five spine statements, compressed to one paragraph.
- **L2** the five statements, one section each. Every section ends at a node that L3 expands.
- **L3** the grammar (carried from chapter 3), the edge set (generated), the method that produced
  this book, three worked examples, the honesty table (generated).
- **L4** against schema-first with its concession, the fractal argument in full, the evidence
  estate, the lineage, the participant disclosure, what this loses.
- **L5** the concept register with definitions, the path atlas, the carried sources, the
  measurement tables, the full findings register.

## One thing the first book has that the spine does not

Named here so their absence is deliberate rather than accidental.

**Wardley maps are now a sixth candidate, not an exclusion.** The first draft of this file put
them off the spine. The founder reversed it, and the reasoning is in statement 6 above rather
than here.

**Graph RAG.** Per memo 1.17, this is a stated position and not a theme: one glossary entry and
one passage where the deterministic-retrieval claim is already being made. The position, in one
sentence for the writer to work from: the objection is not to graphs or to retrieval, it is that
a system claiming to be a graph system whose retrieval runs through a vector store has a
non-deterministic, unexplainable step with no provenance in the middle of it, and if the claim is
graphs, go graphs all the way down. Not a chapter. Not a section. One passage.

## The test this spine has to pass

Before any prose is written at level 2, the five statements must satisfy the computed check that
gives this book its point:

> **Every spine statement is reachable from at least three independent pieces of evidence, and
> those evidence paths converge on it rather than on each other.**

And one test that is not computable and is stated anyway, because it is the real one:

> **By the time the founder reads the spine, the vision he has for the book's concept and story
> should match what is written.**

That is an author's recognition test. It cannot be automated and it should not be pretended
otherwise. Its value is that it names who decides, and when.

If a statement's evidence turns out to converge somewhere else, the spine is wrong and the
statement moves. If a statement has no converging evidence, it is an opinion, and it either
descends to a level where opinions are labelled as such or it comes off the spine.

This is memo 1.9 made executable, and it is the first thing phase 2 builds.
