Why it is here
The altitude ladder on this site exists because of a voice memo in review r004. This is the document that memo was reaching for, written two weeks earlier. Its central move is one the ladder needed and did not have: going up the ladder, from text toward meaning, is decompilation rather than compilation, and decompilation is the ambiguous direction. Lifting is one-to-many, so something has to resolve the ambiguity, and only the author holds the answer. That is why a ladder built by an agent is a proposal and not a finding.
What it says
- Upward is decompilation rather than compilation, which is the ambiguous direction.
- The transformation can be deterministic; the interpretation cannot, and the two should not be conflated.
- The artefact is a graph of author-confirmed meaning, not a claim about truth: is this what you meant is answerable in seconds, is this true is not.
- A reader disputing the reading is the elicitation working. Disagreement is the product.
- The fractal property is intersection rather than nesting: one mention sits in several graphs at once.
- Altitude and query are different controls, and a reader needs both.
Worth re-reading for. Claim 10 answers r004 item 3 directly, and better than the item does. The ladder is many-to-many because meaning intersects, not because the compression was sloppy.
